Remind Your Future Self

You can now send your future self a reminder for any goal on your 43 Things list. Here’s how it works:

  • go to the goal page, click “add a reminder” (upper right).
  • select when you want to be reminded via a dropdown (in a couple days, next week, next month, in about 6 months, by next year)
  • customize the reminder to your future self (or just use the text we provide)

That’s about it. You cancel the reminder by clicking a cancel link when the reminder email shows up in your inbox.

We’re also riffing on All Consuming right now and added I am consuming this and I have consumed this links on the homepages along with some convenient Ajax-tion. Suggestions are always welcome.

  1. But what about “I want to consume this”?

  2. Why no “daily” option on the reminder? And I think a recurring option for the reminder would be good too.

  3. Never mind the bit about recurrence, I just saw the line about cancelling — I assume that’s what it means, anyway.

  4. Yes, it simply recurs until you stop it — but we can rethink that. I’ll watch how people use it for a bit and see if the daily options makes sense. You may have a good point.

As for “I want to consume this” — we’re still turning that one over. I personally like the active state of “consuming” as it focuses the site on activity as opposed to wishlist action — but others have expressed the same desire (I want to consume this). I’ll talk with the other Robots about this on Monday when everyone is back in the office. Thanks for the advice.

  5. It would be nice if I could put you guys in a box with the http://www.rememberthemilk.com guys and shake gently.

With the active state of “consuming”, I don’t think there would be much time from the point of “consuming” to “consumed”. Food/drink, movies, music, just doesn’t last long enough to be worth adding and updating the state.

I can see the use for on-going things like a college course or a book…maybe change it to “learning” and “understands” and do something else with food/drinks, movies and music?

  6. ahh the tickler reminder emerges. Now I can finally get kicked if I wait too long to pay attention to one of my 43T.. Yay!

  7. I prefer “consuming” and “consumed” to “I want to”. Any kind of wish activity I put on 43T and use this site more as a record of what I’ve done and to see what others thought of it. Love the idea of the reminder, I need all the help I can get. Keep up the good work.

  8. I tried to tell it to remind me of one of my gaols in a “couple of days” but everytime I tried it would come up as an error and I tried at least a dozen times.

  9. Edina said 2 days later:

I tried to tell it to remind me of one of my gaols in a “couple of days” but everytime I tried it would come up as an error and I tried at least a dozen times.

Same thing’s happening to me with reminding myself in a couple of weeks (admittedly I didn’t try any other time options – I just assumed it was a universal problem).

  10. I tried to set up a reminder for one of my goals “in six months” and it kept giving me an error also.

  11. It’d be so great if All-Consuming allowed a person to reorder the list of books read according to the date that they read them!

  12. Sorry about the reminder errors — I’ll have Toddles look at it first thing when he’s back in the office this week.

  13. The problem with some reminders causing errors should now be fixed. Sorry for the trouble… now go remind your future self!

  14. Interesting. This can help me organizine myself.
