Profile page preview: widgets

We’re getting close to launching the new and improved 43 Things profile page. I thought I’d preview some of the profile page features. First up … widgets. Soon in the right sidebar you’ll be able to choose which widgets you want and in what order they appear. So what’s a widget? For launch we’ll have the following feature widgets for you to customize your profile:

  • Cheers: displays your recently received cheers
  • Flickr: displays your Flickr.com photos
  • About me: share your b-day, city, website, personal statement, etc
  • Morale-O-Meter: track your daily morale on a scale of 1 to 10
  • Personal Challenge: set-up and display a personal challenge

You can choose to display (or not) any of the above widgets. You can move them up and down the right column in the order your prefer. Here’s a preview of my page (click on it to see a larger view):

Next up … adding, editing, reordering and removing your goals

  1. Thanks Daniel, this looks really good. I love the gadgets and that we can customize our pages.

One thing I did not see is a quick way to read people’s most recent entries without clicking the entry links for each goal. Maybe that is further down on the page or still in the works? I hope so.

The look is really nice. Thanks for continuing to improve the site.

  2. Hi Carm — your recent entries are further down the page. They display very nicely and have improved pagination once you click through to “see all entries”. It’s a long page and hard to show a picture of it all. Glad you like what you see.

I think I like “gadgets” better than “widgets”. Nice one.

  3. It looks really good, guys! I love that you’re always working to make the site better. It’s one of the reasons I’m on it so much. :]

  4. Looks neat. I must say that your current site has served so many people so well, it’s quite amazing. I can’t believe I’ve been on here for nearly 3 years.

I assume that we won’t lose our goals etc. with the change? Also, any thought about improving the seatch engine feature? For example, I’d love to sort members by number of goals completed, by their location, join date, etc. In addition, right now the search doesn’t seem to work well. For example, if you search for “give 3000 cheers”, nothing comes up, but if you type it in the “What do you want to do?” box in the front, there are people who are doing it, or have done it.

Again, thanks for all your work on this wonderful site.

  5. Hi llong — glad you like the new designs. This is a design overhaul and it doesn’t affect content at all (your goals, entries, cheers, etc. remain intact).

I was able to search and find ‘give 3000 cheers’ by adding a period at the end of my search query. Wacky! I’ll ask Laurel about that one.

  6. I like the changes a lot. But . . . I can’t get my flickr photos to show. I have the right username entered, but no photos show up. Do I have to have a flickr pro account or is this not the problem?

  7. Hi PaK — flickr photos should work. I had the same trouble when I first added the widget and edited it to add my Flickr screen name. I found out that I was using the wrong screen name (I was confusing it with a username). click the “help me find it” link when you’re in edit mode and make sure you’re entering the correct screen name — I suspect that will fix the issue.

  8. The Personal Challenge one looks useful, but seems broken. The year field for the date shows numbers like 1052568732 for the year, and won’t save the challenge because the date is in the past.

I tried “Contact Us” to report it, but that form isn’t working either.
