She did it. In her first week on the job, Kathy Mar, our newest Robot brought cool, fresh water back to our office. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s already made about a bazillion lists on 43Places.

Kathy’s been a user of 43Things since December 16, 2004, making her one of the first 300 users. We are still working out her title, but “Captain Obvious” is in the lead. She brings a practical approach to the Co-op that is already getting us to rethink some of the 6 year old ruts we’ve created for ourselves.

Kathy is a lifelong Capitol Hill native. She’s a graduate of Steven’s Elementary, Meany Middle School, Garfield High School, and Columbia University. She’s an accomplished internet veteran. Kathy’s worked at Microsoft, Real Networks, Disney and multiple mobile companies.

Hiring Kathy brings the Robot Co-op back up to fighting strength. We are now 6 Robots. She also adds the 10th dependent (Joe and Venessa are about to bring it to 11).

The Robot Co-op is looking for a front-end focused Software Development Engineer who can drive the future of our web apps.

The Robot Co-op is a small software company located in Seattle, WA. In 2004, we created the Webby Award winning website 43Things.com. Today, over 2 Million people have made a list of their goals on our site and shared it with the world.

How work gets done at the Robot Co-op. - photo by Jason Sutter

The Robot Co-op has a history of technical innovation: five years ago we were one of the first commercial sites to use Ruby/Rails, we use external APIs like Amazon’s EC2, SimpleDB, S3, and Mechanical Turk to run our sites, and we’ve incorporated Facebook Connect and iPhone Apps into our web applications. We need you to push us further.

We offer great compensation and benefits and a very flexible work environment that prioritizes personal development and happiness over the drudge work of many desk jobs.

Required Skills:

Minimum of 5 years professional software development experience in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, and expertise in Javascript libraries like prototype.js

Ruby on Rails expertise, 3 years professional experience desired

Experience with developing browser-independent web apps used by the public

Ability to collaborate with team members to produce page designs in CSS

Familiar with Unix-based server environments

Comfortable working in a loose, non-dogmatic, agile development environment

Desired Skills:

Focus on writing maintainable code and automated tests

Familiar with SQL, query optimization, and database tuning (especially in MySQL)

Comfortable with OO design and data modeling

Experience developing and consuming web-based APIs

Excited about iPhone Apps, FacebookConnect, Amazon Web Services, and other emerging technologies

Bonus:

Knowledge of Flash/ActionScript

While all the acronyms matter, a personality fit is also important. We work closely together, brainstorm projects and solutions as a team, and we do a lot of talking about ideas and technologies. We will consider remote candidates but require a trial contract to make sure things work well for both parties. Relocating candidates are also welcome and we can help with relocation expenses. Sorry, we have no H1-B Visas.

To start the conversation, send us a well crafted cover letter/email along with a relevant resume.

Email: jobs@robotcoop.com

Eric has more to say on this topic

Robot Co-op Software

All our online machines run FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE. We use Amanda for backups which gets rsynced off-site. Subversion is used for revision control of all our configuration data.

We have our own CVSup mirror and package build machine which builds packages for all our boxes to keep things in-sync and to decrease the load on FreeBSD’s CVSup mirrors. We also NFS-mount the src and ports directories to reduce wasted disk space. portaudit is used for vulnerability monitoring and portupgrade for performing package upgrades.

Critical processes are watched by dwatch. Clocks are synchronized with ntpd.

Webservers (x4)

The webservers all run PAE kernels with 6GB of ram. 2GB is allocated to memcached and the rest gets chewed up by Rails processes. Each of our sites gets its own set of processes and we have 25 total Rails processes running per host.

For pages our webservers are all Apache 1.3 with mod_fastcgi. Apache logs are rotated by cronolog and processed by AWStats (but I might switch to Visitors).

We’re using Rails (of course) to generate our pages. We use a library very similar to CachedModel to fetch ActiveRecord objects out of memcached. We don’t use any page or fragment caching.

For images our webservers are WEBrick using a Ruby MogileFS library I wrote (but have not yet released). Image resizing is performed by RMagick, occasionally on-the-fly.

We use the lang/ruby18-nopthreads port of Ruby because we experienced an incredible load increase with the default pthread version.

Each machine runs memcached with 2GB of cache (so be sure to set kern.maxdsiz and kern.maxssiz in /boot/loader.conf appropriately). We store sessions, ActiveRecords and random other expensive-to-compute data in memcache.

Each machine is a MogileFS tracker node and file store. All our images get stored in MogileFS. We use NFS mode due to problems with components of Perlbal on FreeBSD. (With the way we’ve implemented image serving and FreeBSD’s NFS implementation it works out fine.)

Our webservers all run sendmail set up as a smart host pointing to a machine running postfix. This keeps outbound mail sending fast and reduces the amount of maintenance.

Database

We have one database server, it runs MySQL 4.1.x and isn’t all that special. Bob tuned it based on Wikipedia’s MySQL configuration.

Miscellaneous

We have one machine that does miscellaneous jobs. It runs postfix for inbound and outbound mail, runs crons that update memcached, analyzes log files and a small handful of other unimportant things.
